Adaptation Minihandbook

I'd like to compile a list of those various adaptations listed for classes and PrCs. Those are the variants that are rarely fleshed out in the Adaptation section of classes. Some are described well enough, like the Unarmed Swordsage or the Dead God Ur-Priest, others are simple ideas that need some tweaking to make work, like the Arcane Swordsage and the Stonestorm Striker, and still others are just design ideas with few or no mechanical details, like the Non-Dwarf Deepstone Sentinel. I'd like to not only compile a list of them, like the Alternative Class Features handbook, but also a list of suggested fixes to make them work properly. I don't think it's quite enough to warrant becoming a handbook of its own (most of it could be put in the existing ACFs handbook), but I would like to get the information from the various splatbooks into one place.

I've only included the ones with actual mechanical changes described or suggested.

Are some of these homebrew? Or all out of the book?

These are all written in the actual books. Many classes have an "Adaptations" section (usually towards the end near "This Class in the World" and sample NPCs) that list ways to adapt the class to different character concepts or campaign settings. This is just a list of the adaptations that are more fleshed out and alter actual game mechanics. Some of the better known ones are often bandied about like actual ACFs and proper variants, like the Unarmed Swordsage and non-arcane Anima Mage.

Many of the adaptations miss certain aspects of the class that would probably be changed alongside the specified changes (like the non-Shadowcasting Noctumancer not removing Shadowcasting progression), or that list some specific alternatives from among many in a reasonably defined category (such as the non-Half-Orc Menacing Brute requiring Persuasive or a similar intimidation-related feat). For those, I tried to include a suggested changes entry explaining what was probably missing, or trying to elaborate on the generalities espoused. If you want to go strictly by the book, just ignore the suggested changes. All other entries for those classes and adaptations are based solely on the actual text.

Unarmed Swordsage
Status: Works out of the book
Requirements: No change
Gains: Unarmed Strike ability (as Monk)
Loses: Light Armor Proficiency
Suggested Changes: If you use RAI that the Swordsage's AC Bonus ability works when unarmored in addition to while in light armor, then no changes are needed. Otherwise, you should make it work while unarmored.

Arcane Swordsage
Status: Needs tweaking and/or clarification
Requirements: No change
Gains: Ability to learn and use arcane spells from the abjuration, evocation, and transmutation schools as maneuvers.
Loses: Light Armor Proficiency, Hit Die reduced to 1d6
Suggested Changes: As a basic idea, this looks like it works out of the box. However, this should have some clarification done to it. Do the maneuver-spells count as extraordinary abilities (the default for maneuvers), spells, or supernatural abilities (the standard for most magical maneuvers). Does the Arcane Swordsage still have access to the normal Swordsage disciplines in addition to the spells? Do they count as having a spell list or as being able to cast spells for the purposes of prestige classes and the like?

Bloodclaw Master (ToB 97-99)

The book suggests changing the class to that of a druidic warrior or a Wild Elf forest sentinel. The basic stance of the class (originally Mountain Fortress Stance) would cause an Entangle effect instead of difficult terrain and the remaining class abilities would be changed to fit the new theme.

Suggested Changes: You may also want to change the thinblade/courtblade requirements in the PrC requirements and the Elegant Strike ability to weapons more suited to the race using the class. They don't necessarily have to be weapons that can benefit from the Weapon Finesse feat (such as the longsword and scimitar, both weapons that can benefit from Elegant Strike).
Note that this adaptation also allows for other deities and/or races for which a Dexterity-based fighter with some divine powers makes sense to take the class. Human worshippers of Pelor was just the only example of such.

Luckstealer (RotW 118-122)

Suggested Changes: Darkvision should be specified to be to 60 feet, the standard distance granted for most forms of darkvision. Requirements should specify that the service to be done is for a Drow community. The book also suggests that nonevil player characters would not want to meet the dark elves, implying that this should also have a requirement of an evil alignment.

Skypledged (RotW 126-131)

Whether this class should be available for non-Raptorans is not addressed. If you make this into a prestige class focused on an element other than air, you should probably look for another, more appropriate race. Don't forget to modify the Flight ability requirement and the Instant Supplicatication, Servant Supplication, Assumptive Supplication, and Skypledge abilities, too.

Adaptation
As written, the prestige class reflects an important event in raptoran history: the Pact with the air elementals. It can also serve as a model for any spellcasting prestige class that has pledged itself to an extraplanar power. If you alter the class in this way, you can leave the spellpool class feature intact and develop new abilities to replace the beckon and cyclonic doom class features.

Suggested Changes: The adaptation suggests some revision for non-Goliath Dawncallers. It's reasonable to assume that only fluff would need changing as none of the abilities are race-specific, but you may want to change some of it anyways. Consult your DM.
Note that this class actually works better as written for a non-Goliath Bard than for a Goliath Bard. The 10th level class feature, Song of the Mountain, only affects humanoids and the Dawncaller himself. Goliaths are Monstrous Humanoids.

You could create a similar "poison thorn assassin" class, for example, that was designed for elves, not goblinoids. You would replace meld into stone, stoneskulk, and corrupt stone with forestskulk, tree shape, and perhaps tree stride or blight. Rather than stonedeath strike as a 5th-level ability, perhaps a poison thorn assassin can exude its own poison periodically for a particularly deadly attack.

Stonespeaker Guardian (RoS 127-128)

These adaptations change the focus on stone and mountains to one of fire, magma and volcanoes or one of water and oceans. The class features would need to be redone and the Stone Form feat requirement would need to be replaced with a new feat appropriate to the new element and environment. Thus the Magmaspeaker Guardian would be able to take on a fiery form or one made of magma, and the Oceanspeaker Guardian would take on a watery form with a swim speed and eventually the Vortex ability of Water Elementals.

If you are not going to use a horror campaign, you will have to make adjustments for the lack of the taint mechanic. The feat requirement for entry will have to be changed. Either select a different feat or possibly add a skill requirement, such as a particular Knowledge skill. You will also have to develop a new mechanic for the bonus power points. The simplest solution would be a set bonus amount per subverted psion level. Use this total for the DC check for Lust for Power.

If you don't want to use psionics, this can switch to a magic-based prestige class with a little work. Probably the hardest part will be converting taint points to bonus spells. A possible solution would be to allow the player to trade taint points for spell slots using the standard psionic power point conversion (in other words, 1st-level costs 1 point, 2nd-level costs 3 points, up to a 9th-level cost of 17 points). Limit the player to no more than three bonus spells per level and they can select up to their maximum castable level. Once the taint points have been converted to bonus spells, they cannot go back and switch them around. The shrouds will use an appropriate spell slot to cast. The two psionic monsters will have to be replaced as well. An 8-HD shadow and a dread wraith are possible candidates.

Another variant might be one that melds two spontaneous casting arcane characters, such as a sorcerer and a warmage, allowing the two to blend their spell lists in a manner similar to the benefit of the expanded spell knowledge class feature.

Suggested Changes: Change spellcasting requirement to "Able to spontaneously cast 1st-level arcane spells, able to spontaneously cast 2nd-level arcane spells from a different class."
Change Spellcasting advancement to advance two different spontaneous arcane classes instead of one spontaneous and one prepared.
Change Expanded Spell Knowledge to let you add a spell known from another spontaneous arcane spellcasting class's spell's known list instead of from a spellbook.

The Jaunter prestige class from the Expedition to the Demonweb Pits module has an adaptation for allowing it to advance spellcasting 5/5.

Basically you give up the Travel Power(su) (daily uses of benign transposition, baleful transposition, teleport, and plane shift)  in exchange for:

With a bit of work, this prestige class could be adapted to appeal to spellcasters.
Use the standard Base Attack Bonus for the spellcaster in question (that is, average for clerics or poor for wizards).
This version of the prestige class should have one good save (either Reflex or Will), and the others should be poor.
The prestige class can grant a full spellcasting progression if you simply remove the travel power ability (and all its subordinate powers) and add the spells on the following table to the jaunter’s spell list.
The class should, however, also retain the fast movement, dimension door, and freedom of movement abilities.
